Profile of MUSWEN

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) is the umbrella body for all Muslims in South Western Nigeria as represented by the State Muslim Councils/Communities and Muslim organisations and institutions domiciled in the South West geo-political zone of Nigeria. This is the area consisting of the present Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo States of Nigeria. Indeed, MUSWEN rests on the State Councils/Communities that coordinate the affairs of Muslims in the six States as its primary constituent units.

MUSWEN embraces all the generations and categories of Muslim organisations in the region. These include old and new generation Muslim Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs) as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs). Among other vital components of MUSWEN are bodies of Muslim intellectuals, professionals, business people, women and youths. The League of Imams and Alfas occupies a special place of honour in MUSWEN. Muslim traditional and community leaders as well as Muslim title holders are also adequately carried along in the affairs of MUSWEN.

The vision of MUSWEN is for the body to serve as a united and effective voice for Muslims in the region under a strong, veritable and collective leadership. The overall aim is to raise the profile of the Muslims of this part of Nigeria. This includes enabling them and their offspring to live their lives fully as staunch believers and practitioners of the faith while at the same time contributing their quota to the development of the country as responsible and respected citizens.

MUSWEN was officially inaugurated in Ibadan, Oyo State on Sunday, 10th August, 2008. The epochal event represented the culmination of past attempts at forging a united front among Muslims in the South West region of Nigeria. Indeed, MUSWEN was a big dream that has become a pleasant reality.

Since its inception, MUSWEN has provided leadership for, and helped deepen peace and unity among Muslim stakeholders in the region. Besides, the body has taken genuine steps that have set the Ummah in the region on the path of development and progress.

Over the years, MUSWEN which has grown to become one of the main constituent parts of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is recognised by that apex Islamic body as well as governments and non-governmental organisations as the primary platform for engagements on matters relating to Muslims and inter-faith relations in the region.

What’s more, MUSWEN plays a pivotal role in the affairs of Muslims in Southern Nigeria, and stakeholders in this part of the country continue to acknowledge the place of MUSWEN as the hub of engagements as it also serves as the coordinating organ for the office of the Deputy President-General (South) of NSCIA.

Indeed, for the Muslim Ummah in the South West region of Nigeria, the first ten years of MUSWEN’s existence (2008 – 2018) constituted a treasured Decade of Unity, Peace and Progress.
