FAQs

MUSWEN full meaning is Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria.

MUSWEN is the umbrella body for all Muslims in South Western Nigeria as represented by the State Muslim Councils/Communities as well as Muslim organisations and institutions domiciled in the six States in the region. The body which is one of the main constituent parts of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) is recognised by governments and non-governmental organisations as the primary platform for engagements on matters relating to Muslims and inter-faith relations in the region. What’s more, MUSWEN plays a pivotal role in the affairs of Muslims in Southern Nigeria, and stakeholders in Southern part of the country continue to acknowledge the place of MUSWEN as the hub of engagements for Southern Muslims while it also serves as the coordinating organ for the office of the Deputy President-General (South) of NSCIA.

MUSWEN was officially inaugurated in Ibadan, Oyo State on Sunday, 10th August, 2008. The epochal event represented the culmination of past attempts at forging a united front among Muslims in the South West region and entire Southern part of Nigeria. Indeed, MUSWEN was a big dream that has become a pleasant reality. The idea was initiated by THE COMPANION, an organisation of Muslim men in Business and the Professions. The Companion took this noble initiative by inviting Muslim organisations and Leaders to a Leadership Roundtable Session as part of the Annual National Conference of the organisation held in Lagos on Saturday,28 Muharram 1425 A.H. (20th MARCH 2004) till emergence of the MUSWEN in 2008.
In the past 10 years, MUSWEN has provided leadership for and helped deepen peace and unity among Muslim stakeholders in the region. Besides, the body has taken genuine steps that have set the Ummah in the region on the path of development and progress. It is to the Glory of Allah that the past decade has been marked by a number of important positive milestones. Indeed, for the Muslim Ummah in the South West region of Nigeria, the past 10 years constituted a treasured Decade of Unity, Peace and Progress. As a mark of gratitude to Allah (swt), therefore, the leadership of MUSWEN has decided to celebrate this historic achievement. As an evolving organisation, after the first decade which was marked by the painstaking laying of the building blocks, selfless drive for bringing all stakeholders under one umbrella in the region and the unremitting resolve to surmount the teething challenges, the organisation is now poised to move into a new phase – MUSWEN 2.0: A New Decade of Consolidation and Growth.
MUSWEN embraces all the generations and categories of Muslim organisations in the region. These include old and new generation Muslim Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs) as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs). Among other vital components of MUSWEN are bodies of Muslim intellectuals, professionals, business people, women and youths. The League of Imams and Alfas occupies a special place of honour in MUSWEN. Muslim traditional and community leaders as well as Muslim title holders are also adequately carried along in the affairs of MUSWEN.
The key activities lined up for the anniversary are Stakeholder Engagement, Press Conferences, International Conference on Islam in Yorubaland and the Grand Finale. While the International Conference will hold on Saturday, 6th October, 2018, the Grand Finale will hold on Sunday, 18th November, 2018. Both events will be held in Ibadan, Oyo State where the Headquarters of the MUSWEN is situated. However, for practical reasons, the anniversary will be largely low-key.
The Chairman of the Central Committee of the Tenth Anniversary is Barrister Y.K.O Abdulkareem while Professor Muhib O. Opeloye is the Chairman, Conference Planning Committee.
